Competition Rules
Entrants must meet the eligibility requirements as listed within this website. Entrants who are found not to meet the eligibility requirements will be disqualified and will forfeit their entry fee.
Prize competition is for individual entrants only. No team submissions will be accepted.
Submissions must be completed by the entrant and represent their own original design work. Any submission that violates this rule will be rejected.
All work must be submitted by the stated deadline. Failure to submit a competition entry by the deadline will result in disqualification and forfeiture of the entry fee.
All background files shared with the entrant as part of the competition belong to the Martin Travel Prize committee and cannot be publicly shared or used without express written authorization from said committee.
The Martin Travel Prize reserves the right to retain for archival or exhibition purposes any work executed as part of the competition. In addition, the Martin Travel Prize reserves the right to document, reproduce, and publish images of any such work in publications, printed or electronic, for the purposes of publicity and outreach, giving publication credit to the creator.
Roger Martin was renowned for his sketching and analytical drawing abilities. Entrants may use any technique for design representation (analog and digital drawings, physical/3D models, etc.), but submissions must include analog drawing work. This could be sketches, diagrams, hybrid drawings, etc. The extent of analog drawing to be included is left to the entrant’s discretion but shall represent approximately 50% of the board content.
All work must be captured digitally and organized into no more than two 24"x36" equivalent boards. Entrant’s boards must not have their name on them. These boards must be uploaded as pdf files to the competition google folder by the stated deadline.
Travel Prize Rules and Details
The Martin Travel Prize will start on July 1 of the award year and all travel and work associated with the Prize must be completed by June 30 of the following year.
The awarded Martin Prize Fellow agrees to publicly exhibit their work by the stated deadline set by and at a location to be determined by the Martin Prize Committee.
The Martin Travel Prize Fellow will enter into a contract for professional services to the University of Minnesota and be paid in two stages. The majority of the prize value will be paid at the start of the fellowship period to cover travel expenses, with the remainder paid to support the development of the exhibit at the end of the fellowship period.
The University of Minnesota will generate a 1099-MISC for professional fees to the Martin Travel Prize Fellow and will report such amounts to the IRS. Typically reimbursable expenses may be deductible on the Fellow’s tax return. The Fellow should contact their tax advisor with questions or for advice.
The Martin Travel Prize Fellow is an independent contractor and not an employee of the University of Minnesota or the Martin Travel Prize committee. The Fellow accepts all liability from their work activities and travel accomplished as part of their Travel Prize.
